Cast Prototype Tools
Development of technology for manufacturing prototype and production tools through combining Rapid Prototyping technologies and investment casting process in order to achieve time and cost benefits. The project was focused on creating prototype and production tools using stereolithography and investment casting and it involved:
Development of predictive tools to assess investment castings shape and dimensional accuracy, which depended on complex volume changes that occurred in the process of casting, solidification and cooling. These volume changes (shrinking) depended on casting conditions, chemical composition and geometry of the casting.
The project can be characterised as fundamental research into solidification process of cast tool steels to determine the relationships between process variables and dimensional accuracy of the castings.
The engineering part of the project was related to the development of design guidelines,
casting procedures, ceramic shells preparation, and reverse engineering procedures,
